Located in eastern Minas Gerais, Celulose Nipo-Brasileira S.A. (CENIBRA) operates an industrial site in the municipality of Belo Oriente (MG), with two production lines of bleached eucalyptus short-fiber pulp and an installed capacity of 1.2 million tons per year. The company is present in more than 80 municipalities in Minas Gerais, generating more than 8,000 direct jobs. It is the first company in the forestry sector recognized with the LIFE Certification for its commitment to biodiversity conservation.
Cenibra's Material Registration Center is responsible for creating, maintaining and governing material master data, playing a strategic role in ensuring correct purchases and the quality of the information used across the operation.
After the SAP go-live in 2003 and a data cleansing project carried out between 2004 and 2006, the area went more than a decade without a specific solution to manage its processes. As maintenance and investment demands grew from 2015 onward, the volume of new records increased significantly, exposing operational limitations that compromised process efficiency.
The main challenges included the lack of effective participation from the areas responsible for technical information, requests placed through PM notifications in free-text fields, generating incomplete or inconsistent information, manual filling of 94 fields spread across 78 SAP views for each plant, the use of five parallel spreadsheets to consolidate information before loading it into the system, no follow-up on request status or performance indicators for the area, and long lead times, averaging 16 calendar days to complete a registration.
This scenario generated rework, operational delays and low visibility over the entire process, in addition to reducing the organization's productivity.
Given this scenario, Cenibra hired a specialized consultancy to assess its material registration processes. The diagnosis confirmed that, beyond reviewing the processes, it was essential to adopt a tool capable of structuring master data governance and automating operational activities. The company then looked for a solution that would provide a single, centralized environment for all registration activities, faster, standardized and reliable processes, fewer deviations in material specifications, greater integration between the areas involved, full traceability of requests, more control over indicators and SLAs, less rework, and a better experience for internal users.
